Fifth victim of Mirpur gas fire dies

A 25-year-old woman has become the latest casualty from the burn injuries in a fire triggered by gas accumulating in a kitchen in Dhaka’s Mirpur.

Swapna, identified by a single name, succumbed to her injuries around Saturday afternoon, reports bdnews24.com.

Five out of the seven people burnt in the fire have now passed away.

Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, resident physician at the emergency department of the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, said: “Swapna passed away around 4:30pm on Saturday. She had sustained burns on 14 areas of her body in the fire and was receiving treatment in the hospital's intensive care unit.”

A fire broke out at a home in the C-Block of Mirpur’s Section-11 around 5:30am on Sunday.

Khalil, Ruma and their three children were burnt in the blaze.

A neighbouring couple – Shahjahan, 35, and Swapna, 25 – also suffered burns in the fire. Shahjahan had burns on 6 per cent of his body, while Swapna had burns on 14 per cent of her body.

They were admitted to the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute in serious condition.

Khalil had burns on 95 pe rcent of his body, Ruma on 20 per cent of her body, Abdullah on 38 per cent of his body, and Mohammad on 35 per cent of his body.

Khalil died on Nov 26, and his wife Ruma died on Nov 30.

The couple's son Mohammad died on the night of Dec 2. Their other child Abdullah died in the same month.

Khalil's son, Ismail, is receiving treatment at the Burn Institute for injuries sustained in the fire.

Swapna's husband, Shahjahan, has already been discharged from the hospital following his treatment.
