Former mayor of Dhaka North City Corporation (DNCC) Atiqul Islam has been arrested.
A team of Mohammadpur Police Station arrested him on Wednesday night in the Mohakhali DOHS area of the capital.
Atiqul Islam was elected as the mayor of DNCC in the by-election held on February 28, 2019. He was re-elected as mayor in the election held on February 1, 2020.
Prior to this, he served as the president of the Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) during the 2013-14 term.
Atiqul was chased away by the public when he went to the Nagar Bhaban on August 18. At that time, he fled through the back stairs of the office building.
The following day, on August 19, the government removed Atiqul Islam, the DNCC mayor, along with the mayors of 12 other city corporations in the country.
