Fourth victim of Mirpur gas fire dies

A 13-year-old boy has died from burn injuries suffered in a fire caused by gas buildup in a kitchen in Dhaka’s Mirpur, which also claimed the lives of his parents and younger brother.

The victim, identified with a single name as Abdullah, passed away at 6:15am on Friday at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute, according to Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, a resident doctor at the institute’s emergency department.

"Abdullah had burns covering 38 percent of his body. As of now, four people have died from the fire," Shaon said.

Abdullah's 10-year-old brother Mohammad died on Dec 1 with burns on 35 per cent of his body. Their youngest brother, 4-year-old Ismail, remains in the institute's ICU with burns on 20 per cent of his body, reports bdnews24.com.

Their mother, 32-year-old Ruma, succumbed to her injuries on Nov 30, while their father, 40-year-old Khalil, died on Nov 26.

The fire broke out in their home in C-Block of Mirpur's Section-11 around 5:30am on Nov 24. Khalil, Ruma, and their three children were burnt in the blaze.

A neighbouring couple – Shahjahan, 35, and Swapna, 25 – also suffered burns in the fire. Shahjahan had burns on 6 percent of his body, while Swapna had burns on 14 percent of her body.
