G K Shamim gets HC bail in arms case

The High Court has granted bail to expelled Jubo League leader Golam Kibria Shamim, popularly known as G K Shamim, in an arms case in which he got life imprisonment by a special tribunal. 

The High Court bench of Justice A S M Abdul Mobin and Justice Md Mahmud Hassan Talukder passed the order on Wednesday after hearing a bail petition filed by G K Shamim. 

Senior Advocate Fida M Kamal, Advocate B M Elias Kachee and Advocate Md Nazmus Sakib appeared in the court proceedings on behalf of G K Shamim, while Deputy Attorney General Samira Tarannum Miti represented the state. 

During the hearing lawyer Fida M Kamal said, “Tribunal passed the judgment of conviction for violation of the provisions of clause 25 of the Firearms Licensing, Renewal and Use Policy, 2016. However, the policy doesn’t have any penal provision. At the same time, the prosecution could not adduce any evidence regarding any crime allegedly committed by the appellant by using his licensed pistol.”

On September 25 in 2022, a Dhaka court sentenced G K Shamim and his seven bodyguards to life imprisonment in an arms case. The seven bodyguards are--- Md Delwar Hossain, Md Murad Hossain, Md Jahidul Islam, Md Shahidul Islam, Md Kamal Hossain, Md Samsad Hossain and Md Aminul Islam.

Judge of the Special Tribunal-4 in Dhaka, Sheikh Samidul Islam, delivered the verdict in the presence of all the convicts. 

Later G K Shamim in that year filed an appeal petition with the High Court challenging the conviction against him. At the same time, he filed a bail petition in the case. Upon hearing on the bail petition the HC granted bail to him. 

Rapid Action Battalion members on September 20 of 2019 arrested Shamim and his seven bodyguards on charges of extortion and tender manipulation. A total of four cases were filed against him on charges of arms, drugs, money laundering and amassing wealth beyond known income. 

Rab Sub-Inspector Shekhor Chandra Mollick, also investigation officer of the case, submitted the charge sheet on October 27 of the same year in the arms case. On January 28, 2020, the tribunal framed the charges against Shamim and seven others.
