The government on Thursday reiterated that it believes in press freedom but expects responsible journalism from all that can help the country move ahead making the government accountable with constructive criticism.
“We believe in freedom of press. We expect all will do responsible journalism,” Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam told reporters at a media briefing at Foreign Service Academy in the evening.
At the same time, he said, they expect that the media will not spread disinformation and they will check the authenticity of the report run by Daily Kalbela. “We are looking into the matter.”
Alam said a high-level committee will be formed where they plan to include some senior journalists to look into this report and the allegations, UNB reports.
Based on the committee report, the government will take action, he added.
The Press Secretary said Bangladesh media is enjoying a golden opportunity in terms of press freedom after the formation of interim government on August 8.
Deputy Press Secretaries Apurba Jahangir and Abul Kalam Azad Majumder were also present at the media briefing.
