The government on Wednesday announced its decision to procure 0.9 million tonnes of rice and paddy from the upcoming Aman harvest season.
Under the procurement plan, parboiled rice will be purchased at Tk 47 per kg, white rice at Tk 46 per kg, and paddy at Tk 33 per kg. The buying period will span from November 17, 2024, to March 15, 2025.
The decision was finalised at a meeting of the Food Planning and Monitoring Committee (FPMC), held in the Cabinet conference room and chaired by the committee's head, financial adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed.
The government aims to purchase 0.35 million tonnes of paddy, 0.55 million tonnes of parboiled rice, and 0.1 million tonnes of white rice (atap) during the Aman season. The procurement price has been set at Tk 33 per kg for paddy, Tk 47 per kg for parboiled rice, and Tk 46 per kg for white rice.
The procurement period will run from November 17, 2024, to February 28, 2025, for paddy and parboiled rice, and until March 15, 2025, for white rice.
The country produces an all-time high of 16.6 million tonnes of rice in the last Aman season.
The target for this year is 17 million tonnes.
The season provides 38 per cent to the total rice count.
