The High Court on Tuesday ordered the concerned bodies of the government to conduct a probe into the allegations of corruption and irregularities against the officials of the Rajdhani Unnayan Kartripakkha (Rajuk) and submit it in the court within two months.
Chairmen of the Anti-Corruption Commission and the Rajuk have been asked to carry out the High Court order.
The High Court bench of Justice Md Nazrul Islam Talukder and Justice Khizir Hayat passed the order after considering a news published in a Bangla daily under the banner of “Rajuk cherage bari gari plot dokan (House, car, plot, shop with the lamp of Rajuk)”.
Senior lawyer Khurshid Alam Khan, a counsel for the ACC, read out the report to the court. Deputy Attorney General AKM Amin Uddin Manik was also present at the hearing representing the state.
According to the published report, "Some are Upper Division Assistants, some are lower Division Assistants and some are Bench Assistants. However, a perfect match in one place among them! Everyone is a millionaire.
Although most of them are third or fourth class employees of the Rajuk with a monthly salary of Tk 20-30 thousand, many of them have one or more multi-storied buildings and modern cars in the capital. Many have plots, flats and shops.
The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) has already filed cases against some employees of Rajuk for allegedly acquiring illegal wealth. But the pace of investigation is very slow. Most of accused are not touched by the law.”
The report also contains the statement of Md Anisur Rahman Miah, Chairman of the Rajuk, over how those employees became the owners of huge wealth despite doing low-paid jobs in the organization.
The Chairman said he doesn’t have a flat or a house in the capital even though he works in the rank of a Secretary. How they did all this is also a question for him.
He said, “Rajuk's condition seems to be such that one has to go to Pabna for getting admission in the mental hospital. I am in service till March 31 this year. I hope so that I can spend these few days well.”
The High Court also issued a rule upon the respondents to explain in two weeks as to why the inaction and failure of them to take appropriate legal action against those involved in corruption and irregularities should not be declared illegal.
It also wanted to know in the rule as to why the respondents should not be directed to take to take appropriate legal action against those involved in corruption and irregularities as published in the newspaper report.
ACC Chairman, Rajuk Chairman, Housing and Public Works Secretary and other respondents have been asked to comply with the rule within two weeks. The court also fixed April 5 for further hearing on the issue.
