The International Internet Gateway operators were compelled by Bangladesh Submarine Cable Company to settle dues, leading to a reduction in bandwidth that resulted in slowed internet speeds for numerous customers.
Mirza Kamal Ahmed, the managing director of BSCCL, stated that 25 out of 34 operators managed to settle Tk 70 million of the Tk 2.21 billion dues on Friday, despite the banks being closed for the weekend. He hopes the operators will pay the rest when the banks open.
The work to restore the bandwidth began on Friday night after the operators agreed to pay the dues, but it will take until Monday to get up to speed, Mirza said on Saturday, according to a bdnews24.com report.
Approximately half of Bangladesh's bandwidth is sourced from IIG operators, with the remaining portion delivered through six International Terrestrial Cable services, which remained unaffected during the bandwidth reduction.
Sumon Ahmed Sabir, the Chief Technology Officer of Fiber@Home, a network service and IP transit provider, emphasized that it is the responsibility of the operators to settle their dues.
He also expressed disapproval of BSCCL for reducing bandwidth on Thursday night, right before the weekly holidays on Friday and Saturday, questioning how payments could be made under such circumstances.
