India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri has said that his country is eager to strengthen its ties with the people of Bangladesh.

Speaking to the media after a meeting with Bangladesh's Foreign Affairs Adviser on Monday at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Misri said that after the political changes of August 5, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh's Chief Adviser had a telephone conversation. He also mentioned that he had a productive exchange of views with Bangladesh's Foreign Secretary on several issues during today's meeting.

The Indian Foreign Secretary emphasised that India seeks a positive, interest-based relationship with Bangladesh, one that benefits both nations. "We have had such a relationship in the past, and we want to continue it in the future. This relationship is people-centred and is beneficial for everyone," he said.

Misri also noted that India desires a positive, constructive, and mutually beneficial relationship with Bangladesh. He mentioned that discussions were held regarding some recent unfortunate incidents involving attacks on cultural, religious, and diplomatic properties. Misri expressed hope that Bangladesh would address these issues with a positive mindset in order to accelerate the relationship further.

Furthermore, he mentioned that both nations are working to remove existing barriers in the tourism and business sectors.

Earlier in the day, the Indian Foreign Secretary arrived in Dhaka on a special Indian Air Force flight to attend high-level talks between the two countries.

This is the first such meeting between the two countries at the highest level following the fall of the Sheikh Hasina-led Awami League government.

Misri is expected to leave Dhaka later tonight after meeting with Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus.
