Internet users across Bangladesh may experience slow speeds or disruptions for four hours due to maintenance work on the submarine cable system and bandwidth services at Patuakhali’s Kuakata station.
Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC (SCPLC) issued a notice on Saturday, expressing regret for the inconvenience.
According to a statement signed by the company’s General Manager (operations and maintenance) Saidur Rahman, the SEA-ME-WE 5, or SMW5, consortium has planned to install a lighting filter in the country's second submarine cable system at Kuakata from 2:00am to 6:00am on Sunday.
During this time, all circuits connected to the Kuakata landing station via the SMW5 submarine cable will be affected, reports bdnews24.com citing the notice.
However, circuits through the SEA-ME-WE-4, or SMW4, submarine cable at Cox's Bazar landing station will remain operational.
Internet users may experience slow connectivity or temporary disruptions while the maintenance work is ongoing.
BSCPLC GM Rahman told bdnews24.com: "During the 4-hour maintenance, there may be disruptions in the bandwidth supplied by SMW5, but the rest of the system's connections will remain operational."
The SMW5 is a 20,000km submarine cable connecting 17 countries through Points-of-Presence, or POPs, from Singapore to the Middle East and reaching France and Italy in Western Europe. The consortium consists of 19 leading telecom operators, including BSCPLC.
The SMW4 is an 18,800km cable linking Singapore to France, passing through countries like Malaysia, Bangladesh, and India. This consortium includes 16 telecom operators, with BSCPLC as a member.
