Japan's government has decided to provide the International Organisation for Migration (IOM) with $2.7 million in assistance for humanitarian support to the Rohingyas staying in Bangladesh and the host communities.

This donation will be used for disaster risk reduction, shelter upgrade, site management and site development and protection for the Rohingya refugees and host communities in Cox's Bazar under the WASH programme, said a spokesperson for the Japan Embassy said.

To this effect, an exchange of notes was signed by Japan's Ambassador to Bangladesh IWAMA Kiminori and Chief of Mission, IOM Bangladesh Abdusattor Esoev.

The project will reach approximately 500,000 Rohingya refugees and people of host communities in Cox's Bazar in total, implementing a comprehensive plan to improve the living conditions among the Rohingya and host populations. IWAMA hopes that the support from Japan's government will improve the living conditions of both Rohingya and host communities.

"I'm hopeful for this comprehensive plan to improve the living conditions for Rohingya refugees and host communities. These five sectors are fundamental to improving the protection, quality of life, and resilience of both Rohingya refugees and host communities, and this project will reach many people in the camps as well as host communities."
