Bangladesh to get $5m from Japan to improve air pollution monitoring

Bangladesh and Japan on Monday signed the Exchange of Notes for implementing the “Project for the Improvement of Equipment for Air Pollution Monitoring,” for which Japan will provide USD 5 million as grant aid.
SAIDA Shinichi, Ambassador of Japan to Bangladesh, and Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky, Secretary, Economic Relations Division, Ministry of Finance, signed the Exchange of Notes for the project in the presence of Ms. IKUINA Akiko, Parliamentary Vice Minister for Foreign Affairs, the Government of Japan.
Based on this exchange of notes between the two counties, Mr. ICHIGUCHI Tomohide, Chief Representative of the JICA Bangladesh Office, and Mr Md. Shahriar Kader Siddiky signed a relevant grant agreement, said a spokesperson of the Japanese Embassy.
In this project, equipment for air pollution monitoring is to be set up to enhance the capacity to measure and analyse air pollutants derived mainly from vehicle emissions in the capital city Dhaka and Chattogram, thereby contributing to enhancing air pollution control capacity.
"Under the ‘Strategic Partnership’, Japan will continue its cooperation for the development and prosperity of Bangladesh for the peace, stability, and prosperity of the region and the international society, and to further develop bilateral relations,” said Parliamentary Vice-Minister Ms IKUINA.
