A local Jatiya Party leader in Chattogram has joined Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, according to local media reports.

Didarul Alam, a member of the Jatiya Party’s Chattogram (north) convening committee, officially joined Jamaat on Friday.

He signed the party’s primary membership form at a programme held at the Model Mosque office in Sitakunda Upazila.

The event was part of a gathering titled “Former Student Leaders’ Assembly,” organised by Jamaat’s Sitakunda unit.

Senior Jamaat leaders, including Nazrul Islam, acting Ameer of the Chattogram city branch, and Alauddin Sikder, Ameer of the north district, welcomed him at the event.

In his joining speech, Didarul said he had been active in Jatiya Party politics for many years but was drawn to Jamaat’s ideology and activities.

“As long as I live, I will stay with Jamaat and serve Islam,” he said at the event.

Jamaat’s Sitakunda secretary Md Taher said Didarul joined voluntarily and completed his membership during the programme.

Didarul is a resident of Barbakund Union in Sitakunda. His grandfather was the founder of the local Kamil Madrasa and a government high school, according to the Jamaat leader.

Asked, Jatiya Party’s central vice chairman Didarul Kabir told local media that he was unaware of Didarul joining the Jamaat.
