Jatka Conservation Week begins Saturday

The national 'Jatka Conservation Week-2019' will be observed in 36 Hilsa inhabited districts from Saturday to March 22 aiming to create mass awareness on preserving Jatka (Hilsa fry) to boost the national fish production.

State Minister for Fisheries and Livestock Ashraf Ali Khan Khasru on Friday said this at a press conference at Fisheries Department Building in the capital. Md Raisul Alam Mondal, secretary of the ministry, was also present there.

The inaugural ceremony of Jatka Conservation Week will be held at Charfashion in Bhola on Saturday. A naval rally led by the state minister will also be held at Meghna River on the day.

The slogan for this year is "Kono Jal Felbona, Jatka-Ilish Dorbona", (No throwing the net, no catching jatka-ilish).

"The production of hilsa is increasing day by day. Around 299,000 metric tonnes was produced in 2008-2009 fiscal while 517,000 metric tonnes in 2017-18 FY," the state minister said.

"It is prohibited to catch Jatka from November to June. Any Hilsa under 25 centimetres (10 inches) size is considered as Jatka. If anyone catches Jatka, he/she will be punished," he added.

The districts are: Dhaka, Manikganj, Kishoreganj, Rajbari, Shariatpur, Madaripur, Faridpur, Munshiganj, Narayanganj, Narshingdi, Tangail, Gopalganj, Bhola, Potuakhali, Barishal, Pirojpur, Barguna, Jhalakathi, Chandpur, Laxmipur, Feni, Noakhali, Chottagram, Cox's Bazar, Khulna, Kushtia, Bagerhat, Satkhira, Rajshahi, Chapainababganj, Sirajganj, Natore, Jamalpur, Pabna, Kurigram and Gaibandha.
