Bangladesh Bank has restricted journalists from entering its office.
The move comes at a time when the financial sector is reeling under various problems – customers are not getting their money back from most financial institutions, a few banks are operating on special loans from the central bank, loan defaulters continue to hold a dominant position, and as a result, unplanned mergers of banks have started.
The restrictions have sparked dissatisfaction among the journalists, and they staged a sit-in in front of the central bank on Thursday morning.
In a bid to overturn the restrictions on media entry, Economic Reporters Forum (ERF) President Mohammad Refayet Ullah Mirdha and General Secretary Abul Kashem held a meeting with Bangladesh Bank Governor Abdur Rouf Talukder at around 11:00 am. However, the meeting ended with no solution.
