Miscreants have shot a Jubo Dal activist in Noakhali’s Sonaimuri upazila.

The incident occurred in Nojorpur village under the upazila at 11 pm on Friday.

Witnesses reported that several miscreants stopped the auto-rickshaw the Jubo Dal activist was riding in and shot him in the chest and legs.

The victim, Jubo Dal activist Mizanur Rahman, 39, son of the late Mohammad Ullah, is from Purba Chandpur village under Ward No 4 of Bojra Union in the upazila.

Locals rescued him and admitted him to the Upazila Health Complex. Later, his relatives transferred him to a hospital in Dhaka for better treatment.

According to locals, there had been an ongoing conflict between Mizan and some youths from a nearby union. Recently, Mizan’s followers allegedly beat one of the youths, escalating the conflict further.

Mizan’s relatives believe he was shot due to this feud.

Upazila Juba Dal Convener Jasim Uddin said that he was aware of the conflict but did not know who was behind the shooting or their motives.

Sonaimuri Thana Officer-in-Charge Morshed Alam said that upon receiving information, a police team visited the scene.

The victim’s family has been asked to file a case, and legal action will be taken after an investigation, he added.
