BNP chairperson Begum Khaleda Zia has been released from house arrest following a unanimous decision made during a meeting between President Mohammad Shahabuddin and the chiefs of the three services, along with representatives from various political parties and civil society.
The President has also dissolved the National Parliament on Tuesday afternoon.
Those who were arrested between July 1 and August 5 in various cases during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement are also being released, a press release from Bangabhaban said.
Khaleda Zia's release comes a day after her archrival Sheikh Hasina resigned as the Prime Minister and fled to India amid fierce anti-government protests.
