Visiting US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu on Tuesday held a meeting with the representatives of civil society.
Post-election democratic situation, climate issues, press freedom, labour rights and forex crisis came up during the discussion held at the residence of the US Ambassador in Dhaka.
Eight representatives of Bangladesh civil society attended the meeting.
They are; the editor of the Daily Star Mahfuz Anam, labour rights activist Kalpana Akhter, rights activist Nur Ahmed Liton, climate activist Sohanur Rahaman, and Mahmud’s Akhter Monisa.
Mr Lu explained his thoughts about democracy and human rights in the meeting, one of the participants of the meeting said.
Preferring anonymity, he also mentioned that the US diplomat underscored the need for freedom of the press and freedom of movement.
Talking to the media after the meeting, Sohanur said that the role of youth in addressing the climate change impacts in Bangladesh was also discussed.
According to meeting sources, the present economic situation specifically the dollar crisis also came up in the discussion.
Mr Lu is scheduled to meet Foreign Minister Dr Hasan Mahmud and Foreign Secretary Masud Bin Momen on Wednesday.
