Majority or 54.5 per cent of the surveyed Rana Plaza survivors still remain unemployed mainly due to their physical health conditions, according to a survey by ActionAid Bangladesh (AAB).

The survey said 22.5 per cent of survivors reported that their physical health condition is getting worse, down from 56.5 per cent last year.

The study, which the AAB has been carrying out after the Rana Plaza building collapse in 2013 that killed more than 1100 workers, comes ahead of the 10 years of the Rana Plaza tragedy.

The AAB disclosed the findings on Wednesday at a programme titled ‘The Rana Plaza Experience: Tragedy to Transformation’ held in the city.

Conducted among 200 survivors in March 2023, the AAB said Rana Plaza workers complained of back pain--36.8 per cent, headache –24.6 per cent while some 26 per cent complained are related to one leg only, can’t walk properly, broken hand and leg problems.

In terms of psychosocial health, 29 per cent of survivors are still in trauma in comparison to 48.5 per cent of survivors last year. Out of the traumatised survivors, 57.8 per cent reported that they are living in fear while 28.9 per cent complained of being tense about their health and safety.
