Former Joint Secretary General of Hefazat-e-Islam Mamunul Haque visited the Detective Branch (DB) office on Minto Road in Dhaka city on Saturday in what he said was to get back his phone, which was seized as case evidence during his arrest in 2021.
Mamunul arrived around 6pm to meet with Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), Mohammad Harun-or-Rashid, a DB official said.
When he left the DB office around 7:45pm, Mamunul told reporters he was neither summoned nor interrogated by the DB. "I came to the DB office of my own accord to get back my phone, which was seized as case evidence when I was arrested," he said.
However, when asked if he had got back his phone, Mamunul did not respond.
He also declined to comment on any discussions that took place during his visit.
As journalists continued to question him, he evaded them and left there in his car.
Former Hefazat leader Mamunul was recently released from jail on May 3. He had been arrested on April 18, 2021, at a madrasa in Dhaka.
