A man was stabbed to death in an attack in front of the Martyred Intellectuals Graveyard in Dhaka’s Mohammadpur on Saturday.
The victim was rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital at 3pm on Saturday, where the doctor-on-duty declared him dead, according to Inspector Md Faruk, the officer-in-charge of the hospital’s police outpost.
The deceased was identified as 26-year-old hardware store worker Fazle Rabbi Sumon.
Sumon, a father of two, lives with his family in a rented house in Dhaka’s Signboard area.
He was visiting his sister in Mohammadpur when robbers accosted him.
Sumon’s sister Tania Akhter said, “Sumon came to my house opposite the intellectuals’ graveyard with his family around 11am today. I was busy cooking and he went out for a bit. Then I heard that he had been stabbed.”
Describing the incident, she said: “A man saw Sumon and demanded his money. Then he attempted to snatch his mobile phone. Sumon did not want to give up the phone.
“At one point in the scuffle, the man stabbed Sumon in his right thigh, grabbed the mobile phone and fled.”
Sumon was first taken to Sikder Medical College Hospital in critical condition after the stabbing. Later, he was taken to the emergency room at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.
The body has been kept at the hospital’s morgue for post-mortem examination, Inspector Faruk said.
