A Rangpur court has granted bail to an eleventh-grade student of Police Lines School and College who was arrested in connection with a case filed over the murder of Abu Sayeed during the quota reform movement on July 16.

Rangpur Juvenile Court Judge Mostafa Kamal granted bail to the 16-year-old Md Alfi Shahriar Mahim on Thursday following a hearing.

Previously, on July 19, the court sent Alfi to prison in connection with the murder case of Abu Sayeed, a student of Begum Rokeya University, who was shot dead during the quota reform protest in Rangpur. However, the arrest and imprisonment of the minor had remained unnoticed until now.

His arrest in the case came to the spotlight on Wednesday when his sister posted a status on Facebook regarding the matter.

The status went viral, drawing a lot of condemnation.

The murder of Abu Sayeed sparked widespread outrage across the country over the brutality of law enforcers during the quota reform movement.

In-charge of Begum Rokeya University police outpost, sub-inspector Bibhuti Bhushan Roy on July 17 filed a case over the killing.

According to the case statement, “Around 2:15 pm, anti-government agitators posing as students, started throwing bricks indiscriminately from various directions and firing from their guns. In an effort to control the situation, the police dispersed them by firing 169 rounds of rubber bullets from the government-issued shotgun from the APC vehicle. The entire university area turned into a battlefield.”

“At one stage, as protesters threw bullets and bricks from various directions, one student was seen lying on the road. His classmates carried him to Rangpur Medical College Hospital, where the attending doctor pronounced him dead. 2,000-3,000 unnamed individuals have been accused in the case,” the statement says regarding Abu Sayeed’s death.
