Police recovered the bodies of a mother and her toddler daughter from their house in Dohar upazila in Dhaka.

The bodies were sent to the Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford) Hospital on Thursday for an autopsy.

The deceased were identified as Kajal Akter, 25, wife of migrant Sirajul Sheikh and her toddler daughter Tabassum. They were natives of Harichandi in Bilashpur Union, according to a bdnews24.com report.

Kajal was a housewife and her husband has lived in Saudi Arabia for the last few years, said Sub-Inspector Mintu Lashkar of Dohar Police Station. Kajal lived with her mother-in-law and two daughters Tabassum and Khadija, 6.

“On Wednesday afternoon, Kajal locked herself and Tabassum in her bedroom. Then she didn’t open the door for a long time. Her mother-in-law called her several times, but she didn’t respond. The neighbours were suspicious and they informed the police. We recovered the bodies around 4:30 pm.”

Police brought carpenters and broke into Kajal’s room, said SI Mintu. She was found hanging from the ceiling fan with a scarf around her neck. Tabassum’s body was found on the bed, he said.

Police found a note in the room, he said. In the note, Kajal requested that her body would not be sent for an autopsy and requested that she be buried at her father’s place.

”She was not on good terms with her husband and had quarrels with him most of the time. We believe that, as a result, she strangled her toddler daughter and then committed suicide,” said SI Mintu.
