Nasimul Gani, a contract-based secretary in the President’s Office, has been appointed as the home secretary.

The Ministry of Public Administration issued a gazette notification regarding the appointment on Sunday, reports bdnews24.com.

Gani was among five officials appointed on a two-year contractual basis in senior secretary rank on Aug 17, following claims of political sidelining during the previous Awami League government.

Earlier, Mohammad Abdul Momen served as the home secretary but was recently appointed chairman of the Anti-Corruption Commission, or ACC.

Gani, a retired additional secretary, was formerly the private secretary to BNP leader and speaker Jamir Uddin Sircar.

Following the Awami League's return to power, he was forced into mandatory retirement.

Similarly, Mohammad Abdul Momen held key positions during the BNP-Jamaat-e-Islami coalition government from 2001, including joint secretary of the agriculture ministry, chairman of Bangladesh Road Transport Authority, and MD of Biman Bangladesh Airlines.

In the 1990s, he was the assistant private secretary to then-prime minister Khaleda Zia.

The Awami League government also sent him into mandatory retirement in 2009 while he was an additional secretary.
