Over 800 killed, 3267 injured in road accidents in June: JKS

As many as 801 people were killed and 3,267 others injured in road accidents across the country in June this year, Jatri Kalyan Samity (JKS) said in a report published on Wednesday.

The Passenger Welfare Association gathered the statistics from the country's media and hospital reports.

Furthermore, 42 people were killed and nine others injured in 46 railway accidents while 12 people were killed, 7 people injured and 9 went missing in a total of nine accidents on waterways during the same period.

In total, there were 612 accidents across road, rail, and waterways, with 855 fatalities and 3,283 injuries.

During this period, 222 people were killed and 1,093 injured in 217 motorcycle accidents, which represent 38.95 per cent of the total accidents, 38.01 per cent of the total deaths and 33.45 per cent of the total injuries.

Most road accidents occurred in Dhaka division -- 133 accidents -- in which 139 people were killed and 214 were injured. The least road accidents, numbering 29, occurred in Sylhet division in which 33 people were killed and 47 were injured.

The members of the Road Accident Monitoring Cell of the association monitor the news of accidents published in national, regional and online newspapers, and this report is prepared with the information of patients injured in road accidents and were admitted at the National Institute of Traumatology and Orthopaedic Rehabilitation (NITOR).

According to information published in the newspapers in June, 584 people were killed and 1,128 were injured in a total of 557 road accidents.

On the other hand, according to the data of NITOR in Dhaka, 2,139 injured patients were admitted this month. Out of which, 922 patients were admitted with broken arms or legs due to motorcycle accidents.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), 15 per cent of patients injured in road accidents die while being treated in hospital or at home. According to the findings, an estimated 801 people were killed and 3,267 injured in June.

The number of public and private hospitals in the nation is approximately nine thousand. The association also asked the BRTA to provide information on the number of patients who were admitted to these hospitals in June due to road accidents.
