Paltan one of the wealthiest areas in Dhaka: BBS

The poverty map on Thursday revealed that the country is on massive economic disparities, with Paltan in Dhaka having emerged as one of the wealthiest areas, where only 1.0 per cent of residents live below the poverty line.

In contrast, Dasar in Madaripur has been identified as the poorest area in the Dhaka division, with a staggering 63.2 per cent of the population living under the upper poverty line, Bangladesh Bureau of Statistics (BBS) 'Poverty Map of Bangladesh 2022' showed.

This report highlights the significant gap between affluent and impoverished regions, shedding light on ongoing challenges in the country's fight against poverty.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh's poverty has been reached to 20.30 per cent in 2022, where rural areas are more vulnerable than the towns.

Poverty in rural areas is 22.60 per cent while in urban areas it is 17.10 per cent.

On a regional scale, the report reveals that the Barisal division has the highest poverty rate in the country at 26.60 per cent, while Chittagong has the lowest at 15.20 per cent. 

The district of Madaripur has the highest poverty rate, with 54.40 per cent of its population living below the poverty line, while Noakhali is the wealthiest district with a poverty rate of just 6.10 per cent.

In terms of individual upazilas, Madaripur’s Dasar is the poorest, with an alarming 63.00 per cent of the population living in poverty.

The report highlights the continued economic challenges faced by many in Bangladesh, as well as the stark contrasts between wealthy and impoverished areas in the capital and throughout the country.
