Police Headquarters has revoked orders temporarily suspending non-cadre members from constables to inspectors, who were dismissed due to ‘administrative reasons’.
The order to withdraw the temporary suspensions came amid the ongoing movement of non-cadre policemen who have set forth a 11-point charter of demand as violence escalated amid the mass uprising of students and citizens in Bangladesh.
A senior official of the police headquarters said, “The Police Headquarters took the decision to calm the personnel on the ground.”
Police Headquarters has two separate branches, which are responsible for looking into the affairs of inspectors and sub-inspectors to constables, reports bdnews24.com.
Additional DIG (D&PS-1) Belal Uddin, who is in charge of sub-inspectors to constables, said, “I have revoked the orders of suspension for the sub-inspectors and constables in my unit.”
“As far as I know, the same order has been issued by other branches.”
However, the withdrawal order will not apply to policemen who have been suspended in criminal cases or by court orders.
He added that the suspension orders have been revoked for policemen who were dismissed during various time periods.
“There is no specific timeline. It could be suspension orders which were issued six months ago or a year ago,” added Belal.
When asked if any decision has been taken regarding sacked cadre service policemen, he said: “This is a matter that is dealt by the ministry.”
Sheikh Hasina left Bangladesh after handing in her resignation on Aug 5 amid a mass uprising across the country.
After the fall of her government, many policemen were killed as the attacks on policemen, police outposts, and traffic police boxes spiked throughout the country.
Police stations have since been empty due to fears of the continuous attack on law-enforcing agencies.
As situations escalated, non-cadre members of the police force went on a strike after making the demands.
They are blaming the senior officers for the deaths of on-duty policemen during the uprising.
The 11-point demand list includes:
Those who killed policemen during the anti-government protests must be prosecuted
Police will no longer work under any government or political party, and will engage in the service of the people and the security of the state as a neutral body
Work shifts cannot exceed 8 hours in a day
Subordinate officers will not obey any illegal or oral orders of superiors
Subordinate officers will be promoted following the same process used for promotion of senior officers
Annual leave should be extended from 20 days to 60 days
Subordinate officers will be paid source money like senior officers
TA and DA bills must be paid within 10 days to every unit of Bangladesh Police
New pay scale has to be formulated
Risk allowance has to be increased
Security should be bolstered to ensuring a safe workplace in every police headquarters, police lines, police stations, outposts, guards, and camps.
