The Awami League has rebuffed reports circulating on social media about a change of date for its upcoming rally at Dhaka's Baitul Mukarram National Mosque scheduled for Saturday.

Sayem Khan, the ruling party's deputy office secretary, slammed the BNP for "spreading misinformation and rumours" by issuing a fake press release.

"We have issued an official press release to the media about the peace rally planned by the Awami League for Saturday," he said.

According to the press release signed by the party's Office Secretary Biplab Barua, the 'peace rally' organised by the Dhaka Metropolitan North and South units of the Awami League will convene at the south gate of Baitul Mokarram at 2 pm on Saturday.

The ruling party's General Secretary Obaidul Quader will be the chief guest at the event.

The Awami League announced the gathering in response to the BNP's 'grand rally' on the same day in Naya Paltan as part of the opposition group's movement against the government. The duelling rallies have raised concerns about political unrest among the general public.

Against this backdrop, a 'notice' began circulating on social media suggesting that the Awami League's rally would have to be rescheduled as Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina would be inaugurating the Bangabandhu Tunnel under the Karnaphuli River in Chattogram on Saturday.

In response, the ruling party expressed disappointment and anger at a 'certain quarter' for misleading the public by disseminating a fake press release about the rally, using the Awami League's letterhead and forged signatures.
