BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi on Tuesday said the party is actively taking measures against wrongdoers who misuse its name for personal gain.
"BNP has repeatedly urged the authorities to take legal action against criminals and troublemakers, but the police and administration remain uncooperative," he alleged at an emergency press conference at the party's Nayapaltan headquarters in Dhaka.
"There is no place for extortionists and wrongdoers within the BNP," said the senior BNP leader, adding that several leaders and activists have already been expelled, dismissed, suspended, or served show-cause notices for their misconduct.
"We have noticed that the media has given little attention to these ongoing organisational actions. Moreover, the lax attitude of law enforcement agencies is perplexing," he claimed.
Rizvi criticised the police administration for its inactivity since the interim government took office. "In some cases, it is evident that certain elements are deliberately stirring up trouble," he said.
He warned that the prevalence of "mob culture" is increasing due to administrative stagnation. "Under the influence of illegal black money and secretive activities, attempts are being made to create chaos in society in the name of this culture," he said.
"Due to the black money and underground dealings of their cronies during the Awami League era, criminals are now being exposed, and signs of potential anarchy are emerging."
Rizvi also accused self-interested groups of systematically using technology and social media to spread propaganda against the BNP.
"The public believes this orchestrated propaganda, along with these misdeeds and artificially created social unrest, is part of a broader plan to obstruct democracy and delay the elections," he alleged.
Drawing parallels with narratives promoted during Sheikh Hasina's tenure, Rizvi said similar stories about postponing elections are being manufactured again.
