BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has called on the interim government to quickly arrange talks with political parties regarding an election.

“We have many expectations for the interim government,” he said. “We believe they will arrange elections within a reasonable time. We have confidence in this government, the people have confidence, everyone has confidence. But of course it [the election] should be held within a limited time. It should be held within a reasonable time. Otherwise, the intended purpose will be completely defeated.”

"I would like to reiterate that we certainly expect this interim government to work with the political parties to speed up an election and implement the necessary reforms to meet the urgent needs of the people."

Fakhrul said, "I want to emphasise the election. Elections are crucial for the reforms that are needed and are coming. Because how else will such reforms come? They will come through an elected parliament. It has to come through them. There is no alternative."

"So I don't believe that a few people can make reforms. I believe that reforms should come through the participation of the people."

‘WANT A ROADMAP FOR THE INTERIM GOVT’

Fakhrul said, "We believe that all those who are working in the interim government are sincere and qualified people. But we want this work to be visible and transparent.”

"We want to see the chief advisor presenting to the public his plans for what he wants to do. He should present a roadmap on how he is working to organise elections quickly, how he will bring about the necessary reforms, and how he will bring relief to the people and move forward to the polls.”

Fakhrul’s comments came during a discussion meeting to commemorate the ninth death anniversary of former prime minister Kazi Zafar Ahmed at the Abdus Salam Hall of the National Press Club on the initiative of Bhasani Anusari Parishad, bdnews24.com reports.

Zafar died on Aug 27, 2015.
