The leaders and activists of Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal (JCD) on Thursday observed a full-day strike rejecting the Dhaka University administration's half-day mourning programme on the murder of DU student and JCD activist Shahriar Alam Shammo.

Shammo, who was stabbed to death on Tuesday night, was laid to rest at his native village Saratail under Belkuchi Upazila in Sirajganj district last night.

JCD leaders and activists held protest programmes on Wednesday and Thursday on the Dhaka University campus where they demanded resignation of the university's vice-chancellor and proctor.

They locked the main gates of the DU Social Sciences Faculty, Arts Faculty and administrative building.

In addition, as part of the central JCD programme, the leaders and activists staged a sit-in in front of the DU VC's residence demanding justice in the Shammo murder case and resignation of DU VC Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan and the Proctor.

JCD central president Rakibul Islam Rakib, DU branch JCD president Ganesh Chandra Roy Shaha and leaders and activists of various levels attended the programme. In addition, leaders and activists of Dhaka College, Eden College, Titumir College, Government Bangla College, Begum Badrunnesa Women's College and Dhaka Metropolitan Chhatra Dal were present also took part.

Meanwhile, some students expressed their anger in social media over allegations that outsiders to the campus to hold programmes, obstructing activities at the administrative building and disrupting exams.

Although there were exams at some departments, students alleged they could not join due to strike. Students studying in the library also complained that their educational activities were being disrupted.

Slain Shahriar's brother Shariful Islam filed a case with Shahbagh Police Station. Police conducted raids in several areas of the capital on Tuesday night and arrested three people in this incident. They were sent to jail.
