The National Citizen Party (NCP) has begun its procession programme in Rangpur after paying respects at the grave of Abu Sayed, the first martyr of the July Uprising.
On the first day of the month-long "July March", marking the first anniversary of the July Movement, NCP leaders and activists visited the grave of martyr Abu Sayed in Pirgonj at 10:30 am on Tuesday, bdnews24.com reports.
During the visit, NCP Convenor Nahid Islam, a prominent face of the movement that toppled the Awami League government last year, said: “The July Uprising is not just a time of protest for us. It symbolises our sacrifices, determination, and dreams. A year has passed quickly, and in that time, we’ve had some achievements and faced challenges."
"On July 3, the NCP will announce the 'July Declaration' at the National Martyrs’ Memorial, where we will also honour the families of the martyrs and the injured. On July 16, we will observe Anti-Discrimination Martyrs’ Day."
NCP Member Secretary Akhter Hossen, chief organisers Hasnat Abdullah and Sarjis Alam, along with leaders and activists from various districts were also in attendance.
Afterwards, the group travelled to Sadullapur in Gaibandha. According to Sadia Farzana Dina, chief coordinator of the party's Rangpur Metropolitan unit, the NCP plans to hold a rally and procession there.
She added that after the programme in Gaibandha, NCP leaders and activists would return to Rangpur in the afternoon. They are scheduled to hold a rallies at several locations in Rangpur, including the location where Abu Sayed was shot, Park Mor, Shapla Chattar, Jahaz Company Mor, Payra Chattar, and the Town Hall Martyrs' Memorial.
In the evening, NCP leaders will participate in a public meeting and rally in Kaunia Upazila. The rally is scheduled for 7:00 pm at the Kaunia Bus Stand.
