Leaders and activists of Islami Chhatra Shibir Dhaka University (DU) unit have placed a four-point demand to resolve accommodation crisis in the residential halls for the newly-enrolled students of the 2024-25 academic session.
The placed the demands through submitting a memorandum to the Vice Chancellor.
SM Farhad, president of Chhatra Shibir's DU unit, along with other leaders, submitted the memorandum to VC Prof Niaz Ahmed Khan in his office on Sunday.
In the memorandum, Shibir expressed concern that the DU authorities have not yet clarified any solution for the accommodation crisis faced by newly-admitted students, even though academic activities are set to begin on July 2.
This has left students, particularly female students, feeling uncertain and anxious.
Shibir has stated that every DU student has the right to receive a seat through legal allotment from the first year.
Their four demands are: A clear plan for the on-campus housing of the newly-admitted students and impartial and transparent hall allotment- through cancelling seats of the students whose tenure has expired, temporary hostel accommodations near the campus until seats are allotted and a well-defined policy for shifting based on merit and need, if these measures fail, an arrangement of Tk4,000 per month as a residential scholarship until seat allotment is completed and finally, they demanded the cessation of "ganaroom" culture that ended after July mass uprising.
SM Farhad mentioned that they recently noticed some individuals posing as guardians of new students, promising hall seats as a planned political trap. He urged new students and their guardians to remain vigilant and called for immediate action.
