Protesters taking part in a non-cooperation programme to demand the resignation of the government have begun to gather at Dhaka’s Shahbagh.
Students and people of different classes and professions began to gather at the intersection around 10:30am on Sunday, blocking traffic on all sides.
The protesters chanted slogans calling for Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation and justice for those killed in the recent violence surrounding the quota reform protests.
The Anti-discrimination Student Movement has called protests and mass rallies at several different points across the country as part of its non-cooperation programme.
Protest coordinators said that the central protest programme and rally would take place in Shahbagh. There will also be protests and rallies at Dhaka’s Science Laboratory, Dhanmondi, Mohammadpur, Technical, Mirpur-10, Rampura, Tejgaon, Farmgate, Panthapath, Jatrabari, and Uttara.
The coordinators have called on students from schools, colleges, universities, private universities, and madrasas, as well as workers, professionals, political activists and other members of the public to take part in the protests.
