Fifty-three cases of murder have been registered at different police stations in Dhaka over the violence surrounding the quota reform protests.

However, it is not yet clear how many murder victims were identified in the various cases.

Dhaka Metropolitan Police Joint Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarkar noted that there were a total of 264 cases of violence at 50 different police stations in the Dhaka Metropolitan area, of which 53 were murder cases. Five more cases are being prepared.

So far, 2,850 have been arrested in connection with these cases, many of whom have been remanded.

They have provided important information, he said.

“We are scrutinising the information we received from them.”

No students are being harassed and police are only working to bring those who were involved in the violence under the law.

The Dhaka Metropolitan Police has no conflict with ordinary students and is very sensitive to their needs, Biplob said. The real saboteurs are being identified through video footage.

“Our real targets are the saboteurs. Those who set fire to the metro rail, the Setu Bhaban, and BTV, are part of the Jamaat-Shibir circle, or are BNP criminals.”

The police official said that block raids were being conducted after the information received from remanded persons was cross-referenced with the intelligence information available to police.

Some cases over the violence were filed by the government, while others were filed by those who suffered losses.

The police commissioner is directly supervising each case, he said.
