The students demonstrating against quota in government jobs on Wednesday vowed to continue the 'Bangla Blockade' programme from 3:30 pm today (Thursday).
However, Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has warned demonstrators of stern action if they cause any public nuisance by blocking roads.
"If anyone tries to block roads in the name of demonstrations defying the court order and creates any public nuisance, the police will take strict action under the purview of law," said DMP additional commissioner Dr Kh Mahid Uddin at a press conference in the capital on Thursday afternoon.
Following the Appellate Division's status quo order on a High Court Division judgment that had reinstated the quota system, the DMP believes there is no rationale for demonstrations causing public suffering, he said.
He expressed police's sympathy for the protesters but stressed the importance of respecting the country's laws and the Supreme Court's decision, according to the local media reports.
"Since the students are educated, I humbly request them on behalf of DMP that they don't organise programmes causing public suffering," Mahid Uddin said speaking at the press gathering held at the DMP headquarters.
On Wednesday, the apex court ordered a month-long status quo on the High Court's judgment to reinstate the freedom fighter quota for first and second-class government jobs.
Protesters, demanding the abolition of the quota system and the reinstatement of the 2018 circular, are holding a 'Bangla Blockade' across the country, including Dhaka.
