Retired Supreme Court Justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik has been admitted to Sylhet MAG Osmani Hospital.

He was arrested near Sylhet’s Zakiganj border while ‘trying to flee to India’ on Friday.

According to Brig Gen Mahbubur Rahman, the director of the hospital, Manik was brought to the hospital from jail on Saturday night.

During his court appearance on Saturday, an agitated crowd hurled eggs and shoes at the former judge.

Sylhet Judicial Magistrate Alomgir Hossain ordered his arrest under Section 54 and sent him to jail, said court police's Inspector Md Jamshed Ali.

According to witnesses, some youths punched and dragged him from the back while he was climbing the stairs of the court premises. Blood stains were also visible on his clothes.

Around 11 pm, Mahbubur told the reporters: “I was informed by the jailer that the former judge was sick and may need surgery around 8:30 pm. So we were prepared in advance.”

“After taking him to the OT, we found out that he has some injuries. Our surgeons have treated him. He is doing fairly well now. He is being kept under observation.”

“It seems he was already suffering from heart disease and diabetes. That’s why we put him under observation,” he added.
