Social Resistance Committee (Samajik Protirodh Committee) strongly protested national unity commission's (NUC) recommendation to abolish the current system of reserved seats for women in parliament.
The platform of 67 women, human rights and development organisations, said that the recommendation would be contradictory to constituency, national policy, United Nations convention and SDG.
Dr. Fauzia Moslem, president of Bangladesh Mahila Parisad (BMP), on Thursday said in a statement that the recommendation placed in a meeting on July 14 is "totally of the NUC's own" and does not reflect the recommendations of reform commissions on Women Affairs, Election Commission and Constitution.
The Social Resistance Committee believes one third of women's representation in the parliament will play a role in establishing women and human rights and help create accountability. The Committee demanded direct polls for one-third reserved seats of women in the parliament.
