Robbers have abducted a child and stolen valuables during a daytime home invasion in Dhaka’s Azimpur.
The incident took place at a residence near Lalbagh Tower on Friday.
“The child’s mother is a government employee, and they live in a rented house in Azimpur,” said Md Jashim Uddin, deputy commissioner of the DMP’s Lalbagh Division.
“Multiple police teams have been dispatched to track down the suspects.”
Following the incident, a post with a photo of the baby attached went viral on Facebook.
The post, shared by a colleague of the child’s mother, read: “A robbery took place at my colleague Farjana’s house in the Azimpur Medical Staff Quarter near Lalbagh Tower. The robbers—a woman and two men—took both valuables and her only child from the house.”
Lalbagh Police Station chief Kaishyanu said a woman had moved into the house as a subtenant on Thursday.
“She was allowed to move in without providing any identification documents, and she is our main suspect. However, the family couldn’t provide her name, address, or employment details,” he said.
Both the child’s mother and the new subtenant were in the house during the robbery.
“When the other suspects arrived, the subtenant opened the door. The robbers then tied up the mother and left with the child, along with other valuables,” he said.
Police have reviewed CCTV footage from the building, which showed three men entering the residence. Later, the subtenant was seen leaving with them.
“Efforts are underway to identify and apprehend the suspects,” said Kaishyanu.
