Shahriar Morshed Khan, a 51-year-old student of the Rajshahi University (RU), has drawn attention of the students by filing nomination paper to contest in the Rajshahi University Central Students' Union (RUCSU) election.

Shahriar, currently a fourth-year student at the Department of Mass Communication and Journalism, is the oldest candidate in this year's race. Despite being a father of four children and having a son-in-law studying at the RU's Department of Population Science, he has continued to pursue his academic goals alongside family responsibilities.

He enrolled at RU in the 2020-21 academic session after completing SSC in 2017 and HSC in 2020 under the Technical Education Board. Over the years, he worked in different private companies before deciding to return to formal education.

"I want to stand by the students with my experience," Shahriar told the FE correspondent after collecting his nomination form for the post of media and publication secretary.

"I hope to work with young candidates. I may be older (than them), but I believe age should not be a barrier to serving the student community."

Shahriar said he feels encouraged by the support he has received from teachers and fellow students across different departments.

"I am optimistic, as people know about my struggle. If elected, I will work for the welfare of general students," he added.

His candidacy has sparked curiosity on the campus, with many seeing his participation as a positive sign. Some students believe his maturity and life experience could bring a different perspective to the union's activities.

The deadline for nomination submission and dope test ended yesterday (Sept 3).
