S Alam Group shuts six factories in Chattogram, sparking protests 

S Alam Group has indefinitely shut down six factories in Chattogram, citing “unavoidable circumstances,” triggering protests by workers worried about their jobs and incomes. 

The factories—S Alam Refined Sugar Industries, S Alam Power Plant Limited, S Alam Cold Rolled Steels Limited, S Alam Cold Rolled Steels Limited–NoF, S Alam Power Generation Limited, and Infinity CR Strips Industries Limited—would remain shut starting on Wednesday until further notice, the business conglomerate announced in a notice on Tuesday. The facilities are located in Kalurghat, Ichangor, and Banshkhali in Chattogram. 

There are at least 12,000 workers and employees in the six factories, according to factory officials.
