The lights for the runway’s landing systems at Saidpur Airport in Nilphamari have not been operational since Sunday evening after a short circuit in a cable underground.

Due to a lack of light on the runway, flight operations at the airport remained suspended for 14 hours till 8:35 am on Monday.

Although the authorities resumed daytime flight services on Monday morning, night flights are still uncertain as the airport’s landing system lights are still not turning on.

Suplab Kumar Ghosh, manager of the airport, said the technical glitch in the lighting system has yet to be fixed as of 11:30 am on Monday.

“Though the runway lights are not functioning, daytime flights are able to take off. Flights have continued since the morning. However, there is concern about night flights due to the lack of lights.”

“A technical team from Dhaka has arrived. They are trying to identify exactly where the problem is. Cables have been brought in. Work continues.”

At least three flights from Biman Bangladesh Airlines and two other private companies were cancelled due to the error. More than 200 passengers were stuck at the airport before resumption of daytime flight services.
