Salman F Rahman, the former advisor to Sheikh Hasina, and Anisul Huq, the former law minister, have been remanded again, this time in a case filed under the Foreign Exchange Regulation Act with the Kotwali Police Station in Dhaka.
On Thursday, Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Arifur Rahman issued the order after a hearing, according to bdnews24.com.
Sub-Inspector Rashidul Hasan of the Kotwali Police Station brought the suspects to the court and asked for them to be remanded for 10 days. The defence counsel petitioned for bail. The judge turned down the bail plea and ordered both of them to be remanded for five days.
The Awami League government fell on Aug 5 in the face of a mass uprising led by students. The Indian media had initially reported that Salman F Rahman fled with Hasina to India.
However, police arrested Salman and Anisul from Dhaka’s Sadarghat while they were trying to flee the country by waterway on Aug 13. They seized huge amounts of foreign exchange from them as well, including dollars, euros, Saudi riyals, and pounds.
According to the case documents, $17,592, 726 Singapore dollars and three red passports were seized from Anisul.
Police seized $12,624 US, 620 Swiss francs, 8,500 UAE dirhams, 1.3 million Uzbekistan soms, 11,650 Saudi riyals, 779 Singapore dollars, 150 British pounds, 1,321 Euros, Tk 50,000, 6,230 Bhutanese ngultrum, 1,000 Indian rupees, 3,320 Thai baht and five green passports, one red diplomatic passport, and a satellite phone from Salman.
Earlier, Salman and Anisul were remanded for 25 days in several rounds.
