Malaysian authorities on Saturday arrested 108 illegal workers, including seven Bangladeshis, from the Selayang wholesale market area in Kuala Lumpur who did not have legal documents.

The majority of those arrested were Indonesians (52), and the others were 35 Myanmar, 12 Indians, seven Bangladeshis, a Nepalese, and a Pakistani, according to media reports.

In a statement, city police chief Allaudeen Abdul Majid said the raid was aimed at criminal activities around the area, particularly those involving undocumented immigrants.

“The police, alongside other departments and agencies, will continue to conduct special operations such as this in the future,” he added.

Earlier, on January 20, over 500 undocumented foreigners were nabbed at an apartment complex in Beranang, Hulu Langat district.

On December 21, a major operation mounted by over 1,000 enforcement personnel in the heart of the city was carried out in Jalan Silang. In all, 1,101 undocumented foreigners were picked up.

Malaysia is a popular destination for Bangladeshis looking for overseas employment. The country is also one of the largest sources of remittances for Bangladesh.
