Death of auto-rickshaw driver: Sheikh Hasina named in another murder case

A murder case has been filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and 10 others in connection with the shooting death of auto-rickshaw driver Shahabuddin during a student protest in Dhaka’s Sher-e-Bangla Nagar.

Shahbuddin’s father Abul Kalam filed the case at Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Begum Farah Diba Chanda court on Thursday. The court has directed Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station to accept the case as an FIR.

This case marks the fifth lawsuit filed against Sheikh Hasina since her resignation from the position of Prime Minister and departure to India on August 5.

Among the cases, one murder case was filed on August 13, two more on August 14, and two additional cases on August 15. Of these five cases, four are related to murder and one involves allegations of abduction and disappearance.

Other accused in the case include former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, former Law Minister Anisul Huq, Sheikh Hasina’s private sector and investment adviser Salman F Rahman, former Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud, former Information and Broadcasting State Minister Mohammad Ali Arafat, former IGP of Police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, former DB chief of Dhaka Metropolitan Police Harun-or-Rashid, Additional Joint Commissioner Biplob Kumar Sarker, and former DMP Commissioner Habibur Rahman.

According to the case details, Shahabuddin was killed by police gunfire at 7:15 pm on August 5, while he was out to buy food. The incident occurred during a student-led protest demanding the then government’s resignation.
