Some of the principles of the Global Governance Initiative (GGI), recently proposed by Bangladesh's position on the recent proposal by President Xi Jinping of China, are consistent with Bangladesh's policy, said a spokesperson of the Chief Advisor on Wednesday.

He was replying to a question on Bangladesh's position on the GGI.

"For example, Bangladesh upholds the principle of sovereign equality in the conduct of its bilateral relations with other countries," he said.

"Our commitment to this principle will endure in the future", he said.

The principles of multilateralism and international rule of law, including the principles and purposes of the United Nations Charter critically inform Bangladesh's foreign policy, he added.

"Furthermore, the interim Government has been pursuing a people-centered approach in order to ensure democratic governance and real results for our people".

"We will continue to adhere to these principles in the design and conduct of our policies taking into account our particular needs and circumstance," said the spokesman.

Here's a 209-word background on President Xi's  Global Civilization Initiative (GCI):

Chinese President Xi Jinping unveiled the Global Civilization Initiative (GCI) in March 2023 as part of his broader vision to reshape global governance and promote "mutual respect among civilizations." The GCI complements China's earlier Global Development Initiative (GDI) and Global Security Initiative (GSI), together forming a trilogy of proposals designed to project China's influence beyond economics and security into cultural and ideological domains. At its core, the GCI rejects the notion of "universal values" defined by the West and instead calls for the recognition of diverse civilisational paths. It emphasises mutual learning, inclusivity, equality, and dialogue among different cultures, positioning cultural respect as a cornerstone of international relations.

Xi argues that no single model of modernization or political system fits all, and the GCI advocates respecting countries' sovereignty in choosing their own development paths.
