An SSC examinee who was critically injured after being stabbed by some muggers in Chawkbazar area of Old Dhaka on Monday died at Dhaka Medical College Hospital (DMCH) on Wednesday.
The deceased was identified as Morshed Alam Tanim, 18, who sat for the SSC examination from Ahmed Bawany Academy in Armanitola. He had been living with his family at 7 Noor Box Lane in Armanitola, UNB reports.
Inspector (Investigation) of Chawkbazar Police Station Md Abul Khayer said Tanim was talking on his mobile phone when a group of muggers approached from behind and attempted to snatch the phone.
As he tried to run, the muggers stabbed him in the lower back and fled the scene without taking the phone.
His friends rescued him and first took him to Mitford Hospital and then he was shifted to DMCH, said Khayer.
After receiving treatment, he was discharged from the hospital the same day.
But his condition deteriorated on Tuesday evening and he was admitted to DMCH where he died around 5:20 am on Wednesday.
The body was kept at the hospital morgue for autopsy.
The exact cause of death will be confirmed after receiving the post-mortem report, police said.
Tanim’s father Firoz Alam, a spice trader from Bamnirgaon village under Raipur upazila of Lakshmipur district, said his son was returning home late Monday night after spending time with friends near Makkusar Mazar.
While talking on the phone alone, the attackers tried to snatch the phone and stabbed him from behind.
Tanim was the eldest among two brothers and a sister.
