Students from across the country are flocking to Dhaka’s Central Shaheed Minar to take part in the ‘March for Unity’ called by the Anti-discrimination Student Movement.

The programme is set to start at 3:00 pm on Tuesday.

Students and members of the public could be seen leading small processions in the Dhaka University and Shaheed Minar areas before gathering at the monument. People were coming in from across the capital and outside the district. Most of those at the procession were from different districts.

Mohammad Atahar Ishrak is part of an 83-member group that came for the event from Khagrachhari Government College.

“Last night we came to Dhaka on two buses and a microbus. Our desire is to ensure that the goals with which we started our movement are not put in jeopardy. The government is initiating the declaration – this has only been possible as a result of the proposals put forward by the students and the public.”

Ruhul Amin set off from Kushtia for Dhaka with a large group from Islamic University last night.

“Many students have come together on behalf of our university,” he said. “We arrived in Dhaka overnight. We hope for the success of today’s programme.”

At 1:45am on Tuesday, the Anti-discrimination Student Movement announced the ‘March for Unity’ programme to be held at the Central Shaheed Minar at 3pm from its offices in Dhaka’s Bangla Motor area.
