The interim government on Monday formed a 10-member task force for each district to inspect and review market and supply chain of essential commodities.

An additional deputy commissioner will head the task force.

The other members of the task force will include an Additional Superintendent of Police, a representative of the District Food Controller, a representative of the District Fisheries Officer, a representative of the District Livestock Officer, a representative of the District Agriculture Marketing Officer, a representative of the Consumer Association of Bangladesh, two student representatives, and an Assistant Director of the National Consumer Rights Protection Department.

A circular was issued in this regard by the commerce ministry on Monday defining the terms of reference of the task force.

The task force will inspect local markets, commodity storage facilities, and other spots of the supply chain to keep the commodity prices at a rational level.

They will also ensure that the price differences between the production, wholesale and retail levels will be kept at a rational level and they will hold consultations with local stakeholders to create awareness about this.

The task force will send daily reports of the market situation to the commerce ministry, the circular said.

It may be mentioned that on Saturday Mahfuz Alam, special assistant to the Chief Adviser, told the media that the government had taken the issue of price hike of essential commodities very seriously.

“Work has started to dismantle the market syndicate and extortion practices, and hopefully we will have a good result very soon,” he mentioned.
