A 10-year-old boy has died of burn injuries caused by a fire sparked by gas accumulating in a kitchen in Dhaka’s Mirpur.

Mohammad, identified by a single name, died at the National Burn and Plastic Surgery Institute early on Monday. He had burns on 35 per cent of his body.

Dr Shaon Bin Rahman, resident doctor at the institute’s emergency department, said: “The burnt child Mohammad died at 3:25am. He was undergoing treatment at the hospital’s Intensive Care Unit.”

Mohammad’s mother, 32-year-old Ruma, died of her burn wounds on Saturday, while his father, 40-year-old Khalil, had died on Tuesday.

Mohammad’s brothers Abdullah, 13, and Ismail, 4, are also being treated at the institute’s ICU. Abdullah has burns on 38 per cent of his body, while Ismail has burns on 20 per cent of his body.

They are both in critical condition, Dr Shaon said on Saturday. Abdullah and Mohammad were in the most danger, he had said at the time.

A fire broke out at a home in the C-Block of Mirpur’s Section-11 around 5:30am on Sunday.

Khalil, Ruma and their three children were burnt in the blaze.

A neighbouring couple – Shahjahan, 35, and Swapna, 25 – also suffered burns in the fire. Shahjahan had burns on 6 percent of his body, while Swapna had burns on 14 percent of her body.
